Requests from Private Providers for Tests or Investigations
Many patients choose to use private healthcare alongside NHS services. We support your right to do so, but it is important to understand how responsibilities are shared between the NHS and private providers.
Why the GP May Not Arrange Tests Requested Privately
GP practices are funded to provide NHS care only. This means we can arrange tests and investigations when they are clinically necessary for your NHS care and when your GP is the clinician responsible for managing the condition.
We cannot arrange tests simply because a private clinic or practitioner has recommended them. Requests from private services fall outside the scope of NHS primary care.
When the GP Will Arrange Tests
Your GP may organise a test if:
- It is needed for their NHS assessment or treatment of you
- They are the responsible doctor for your care
- They can interpret the results and provide any needed follow‑up
If these criteria are met, the test will be arranged through standard NHS processes.
When the GP Will Not Arrange Tests
The practice will decline requests for tests that are not required as part of your NHS care, including those requested by:
- Private healthcare providers (e.g., before starting private medication)
- Nutritionists or other non‑medical practitioners
- Employers, HR departments or occupational health services
- Overseas doctors
- Private consultants where the GP is not responsible for ongoing management
In these cases, the private provider is responsible for arranging and funding the investigations they require.
Accessing Your NHS Test Results
You can access your existing NHS test results through your online medical record or by requesting them from the practice. You are welcome to share these results with any private provider involved in your care.
The purpose of this policy
This approach ensures:
- NHS resources are used fairly
- Care remains safe, appropriate and well‑managed
- Private providers take responsibility for the investigations they recommend
